Emlyn Scott
Emlyn Scott was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1970. He went to junior school at Beauty Point Public School in Sydney and attended senior school at Scotch College in Melbourne graduating in 1988.
Emlyn grew up with a passion for sports including skiing, tennis, swimming, surfing, soccer, table tennis, wave skiing, martial arts and windsurfing. He also enjoyed the more intellectual sports competing competitively in chess and debating.
He also was exposed to the world of money at a young age initially when his father, who was the family's sole income earner, died when he was eight. Money was very tight and some of his earliest memories are of great money stress.
Emlyn's mother was a resourceful women and she focused on building a commercial property portfolio in Sydney that would provide wealth and security for her family and her future. Emlyn witnessed the transition from financial hardship to wealth and learned the importance of independent wealth planning.
Emlyn moved back to Sydney with his mother, new father and brothers after finishing school and enrolled at Macquarie University to study Economics. He graduated in 1991 earning a Bachelor of Economics (BEc) degree. During this period he also worked at Pizza Hut and as an extra on various television soaps and commercials.
He started working for Societe Generale in 1992 as an interest rate options market maker on the floor of the Sydney Futures Exchange, where he started learning the complicated world of advanced option trading strategies. At the same time he began studying a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment (GDAFI) part-time at the Financial Services Institute of Australia (FINSIA). He successfully completed the course in late 1993.
He moved to Australia's biggest bank, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, initially as a broker in 1993, but quickly progressed to their dealing room as a trader in interest rate derivatives. Over the next 4 years he helped build the options business from a token operation into the largest short interest rate options trading book in the country, trading billions of dollars every day.
However, the incredible working hours and pressure took their toll and in 1996 he collapsed with meningitis and pneumonia. He was told that without medical intervention he was only a couple hours from dying. Lying in his hospital bed he realised that he was not in charge of his own life and that he was working someone else's plan. There had to be a smarter way to become successful? He decided to seek the answer to this question.
His first attempt at answering this question involved learning all he could about stock investment and although his investments turned out to be very successful, he realised that there was still something missing in his wealth creation strategy and his search for the answer continued. In 1997 he quite the Commonwealth Bank and moved to London to work briefly before starting his MBA in late 1998. He worked briefly at HSBC and Dresdner Klienwort in interest rate and equity options.
Emlyn began his MBA at the University of Edinburgh achieving a distinction average and graduating in late 1999. But before completing his course he also began working at Martin Currie as a funds manager. It was at this time that he took his first step onto the property ladder by buying a small apartment on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, spending evenings renovating the property.
Emlyn was the first employee of Martin Currie to start the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2000, which is a course of the highest standing in investment management. Emlyn was awarded the CFA charter in 2004.
Soon after starting at Martin Currie Emlyn thought of a new type of derivative that would be very useful for fund managers and with a good friend set up CFD Exchange Ltd to take advantage of his idea. However, the dot com crash and foot and mouth disease in the UK removed their funding and their plans of setting up the Exchange.
LCH.Clearnet Ltd believed in Emlyn's idea and they employed him in London in late 2001 as the manager of Product Development in the hope of working with their exchange contacts to make his dream a reality. Patents were applied for on the idea and the London Stock Exchange worked closely with LCH.Clearnet on implementing the idea. It is scheduled to go live in 2008.
Throughout his time at LCH.Clearnet Emlyn began to concentrate on wealth creation knowledge and building his wealth after the cost of his MBA and self-employment at CFD Exchange. He began purchasing property in London in early 2002 which has grown into a multi-million dollar real estate portfolio and reaches across England.
In 2005 Emlyn decided to start writing Wealth Buys Freedom to test his wealth creation knowledge and produce something that could be used by anyone who wanted the best reference available to learn about wealth creation. He developed the wealth creation formula which simply and visually described the formula for creating real wealth and formed the structure for his book. The idea behind Wealth Buys Freedom grew into the idea for Rich1Percent.
Emlyn resigned in late 2007 from LCH.Clearnet as Head of EquityClear to move back to Australia with his wife and two children to grow Rich1Percent and concentrate on his passion for investment and business. However, LCH.Clearnet continued to employ him as a consultant throughout 2008 for CFDs and business development. This was also around the time Wealth Buys Freedom was completed and published.
